The landscape of business changes on a daily basis. As technologies and processes change, the needs of area companies adjust with it. As a result, employers need a trusted local partner that is well-versed in everything from best practices to Lean and Six-Sigma training, advanced manufacturing, office/computer software proficiencies and much more. The challenge employers sometimes face is finding solutions that provide the necessary skills training, and still allows employees to enjoy the important work-life-education balance. This was the inspiration for Custom Training Solutions, a division of Northwest State Community College.

Custom Training Solutions (or CTS) is committed to providing both individuals and organizations a competitive advantage through hands on learning. Sometimes the solution is getting students in to the traditional class paradigm, while in other cases, CTS brings the classroom to the workplace. In both settings, a hybrid learning model is a possibility. The hybrid classroom consists of a combination of online and in-person lab learning, which helps both companies and employees grow together.

“The hybrid model has been reduced from a 16-week traditional semester to an 8-week course,” says Ron Scozzari, dean of Industrial Technologies at Northwest State. He continued, “We have taken a look at the instructional design of the course. We’ve tightened it up, made it more engaging, more intensive, where the student has the ability to learn more in a shorter period of time.” Scozzari noted that businesses such as Braun Industries in Van Wert, a nationally-renowned ambulance and emergency vehicle manufacturer, have taken NSCC courses through the hybrid model and finished in as little as five weeks.
